About Our Pastured Chickens

This is a far superior choice

Our vaccine free Cornish cross meat chickens arrive via USPS as day old peeps at our three partner farms located within 30 miles of Pleasant Pastures. They are placed in an 85 degree room since they are tiny and have very little feathers and body mass. Therefore they can't handle cool temperatures. There is plenty of fresh water and non GMO, organically managed feed for the peeps to eat at their choosing. As their feathers develop the temperature gets turn down. At about 3 weeks they're moved out to their mobile pasture shelters.

Before we move them out to their shelter we try and find 2-3 days of sunny weather as that helps them adapt better to the outdoor world. Within 24 hours they are happily chomping down fresh grass and any unsuspecting insects in addition to the Non GMO organically managed feed. They quickly learn to get to the front of their shelter when we move them to a fresh plot of grass 1-2 x per day.

Daily moves are important because...

  1. The chickens get fresh grass

2. They don't over-graze their pasture

3. They spread their manure over a larger area which prevents nutrient overload

Once our chickens reach maturity, (8 weeks old) they are carefully transported to a local (13 mile away) USDA inspected facility. They insure the chickens are humanely harvested and chilled immediately to the proper temperature. A peroxide and vinegar spray is used to reduce the bacteria on the chicken. before they are packaged and frozen within 48 hours. All the poultry, that we sell here at Pleasant Pastures, including chicken, turkey and duck are raised on pasture during May-October.

Because we know the diet of the chickens is important, they are carefully fed a mix of the following:

Soy Free Chickens: Fed a balanced diet of wheat, peas, sesame meal, milo, barley and fishmeal, Fertrell PNB, limestone grit, *canola. Without soy, corn, or GMOs.

* Being removed by Spring of 2027

GMO Free chickens: Fed a balanced diet of wheat, corn, soybeans, and minerals

For those looking for slow fast foods made with our chicken, we offer 6 and 9 inch chicken meat pies, gluten free, or regular, and chicken vegetable soup,

We have a fine selection of chicken parts for making your own chicken broth, but if you need something fast and convenient, we also offer chicken broth, quart, made in house here at the farm.
